SYNOPSIS

We have recovered this intimate monologue regarding one of the most important figures in Spanish history, played by José Luis Gómez, who doubles up as an actor who questions Unamuno about his stance at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. A production co-directed by Gómez and Carl Fillion about Miguel de Unamuno, the Spanish writer and thinker, a key member of the Generation of ‘98 and the youngest Chancellor in the history of the University of Salamanca. Unamuno was an intellectual and something of an iconic figure, both in Spain and abroad.

This staging explores the most human side of an intellectual who was full of contradictions -“nothing human is foreign to me” -, hidden behind a serious façade and grim demeanour, based on his reflections, letters and late poems, not to mention the memorable address he delivered on 12th October 1936 at the Auditorium at the University of Salamanca. Overwhelmed by the ruins of the war and the anguish and tragic meaning of life, he embarks on what would be, in the words of José Luis Gómez, “one of the greatest examples of intellectual courage in the history of Spain”.

Today’s climate shows us that the legacy and words of Miguel de Unamuno are as keenly relevant and necessary as ever, teaching us that only dialogue can create the solid foundations for a democratic society.
