SYNOPSIS

Gamblers and caffeine addicts, opportunists, cheats, adulterers, gangsters and moneyed playboys make up the life of Das Kaffeehaus, the work that the prolific Rainer Werner Fassbinder wrote at the tender age of twenty-four, based on the eighteenth century comedy by Carlo Goldoni. With this work he rose from the underground theatre (the legendary "anti-theatre" of Munich) to the Italian-style stage (The Municipal Theatre of Bremen).

Five years after staging Harlequin, Servant of Two Masters (also a rewriting of Goldoni's work), La Abadía has returned to this virtuoso social satire, written in the tradition of the "commedia dell'arte". This work has not lost any of its topical relevance, showing how all human relations and activities are corrupted by power and money.

The British director, Dan Jemmett, whose productions have been staged at Madrid's Autumn Festival, the Comédie Française, the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne and the Bouffes du Nord, will return to La Abadía after his unique staging of El Burlador de Sevilla.

This work will be complemented by a cycle of activities revolving around the figure of Fassbinder.
