Within the framework of the Portuguese Culture Programme (“Mostra da Cultura Portuguesa”), Teatro de La Abadía will host the staging of ENIGMA PESSOA, an intimate show that offers us a poetic tour through various episodes in the real and imaginary life of the Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa.

As a poet, essayist and translator, Pessoa appears alongside Camoens as the most universal figure in the history of Portuguese poetry and, according to Harold Bloom, the most universally representative poet of the twentieth century.

On 30th November 1935 he died at the Hospital of San Luis in Lisbon, leaving behind a fascinating and enigmatic body of work.

This production, directed by Pablo Viar, is based on a selection of literary and artistic materials, ranging from poems, texts and letters written by the poet himself to images of the artistic trends of his time. Throughout the play, starring David Luque and Emilio Gavira, the poet writes about, recalls and talks to some of the most important figures that make up his “Drama em gente” works.

His literary legacy is packed with theatrical appeal and an everlasting relevance, due to his interest in the complex identity of human beings, in fiction, in the modern man and his subjective experience of reality and imaginary realms: occultism and esotericism, history, politics, philosophy and psychology.
