The Abadía has extended its activities to a truly emblematic building located just 20 kilometres outside the capital. Upon the request of the Madrid Regional Government, the Foundation of the Teatro de La Abadía has assumed responsibility for the management and scheduling of events at the Open-Air Comedy Theatre ("Corral de Comedias") in Alcalá since the year 2005.
Built in 1601, in the style of the long-vanished Theatres of Príncipe and La Cruz in Madrid, featuring a structure that was open to the sky, cobble-work, a well and a garret for stage machinery, the open-air theatre was later roofed by means of a series of beams, which improved its acoustics, especially for musical events. The Romantic Age endowed the seating courtyard with its typical horseshoe shape, covered with a ceiling made of plaster that was decorated with paintings. In the mid-twentieth century, a film screen was also installed ... until the theatre gradually deteriorated and fell into disuse.
Thanks to the careful restoration work that has been carried out, the theatre today presents vestiges of all the different ages it has witnessed and this venue of enormous charm breaths again with the recollection of the Spanish theatrical arts.
In the same way as La Abadía, between September and June, the Open-Air Theatre presents classic and contemporary theatre, music from former times, ethnic music and jazz, dance and flamenco, and lyrical presentations and poetry.
